Short answer: no. Yak down measures 14–17 microns — the same fineness range as cashmere — and it is naturally hypoallergenic. The itch people associate with wool comes from coarse fibers scratching the skin. Yak down sits well below that threshold. If regular wool socks make you itch, yak is the fiber to try.
What is yak wool?
Yak wool is the soft undercoat, or down, that Himalayan yaks grow to survive winters at high altitude. It is hand-gathered once a year by nomadic herder families as the animals shed naturally — no shearing, no factory farming, no supplemental feed. The yaks graze wild vegetation, which is why the fiber leaves a lighter footprint than conventional wool production. The coarse outer hair is separated out; only the fine down goes into Happy Yak socks, beanies, gloves and scarves.
Is yak wool warm? Yak wool vs merino wool
Yak is 44% warmer per weight than merino wool, and moves moisture 66% better than sheep wool. That combination is the whole point: warmth without bulk, and a sock that does not turn clammy when you stop moving. Merino is a fine fiber and a good one — yak simply does more per gram, which matters when your boot has a fixed amount of room in it.
| Yak down | Merino wool | |
|---|---|---|
| Warmth per weight | 44% warmer | Baseline |
| Moisture wicking | 66% better than sheep wool | Good |
| Fiber diameter | 14–17 microns | Typically coarser |
| Itch factor | Hypoallergenic, no itch | Varies by grade |
| Sourcing | Hand-gathered once a year, wild grazing | Commonly farmed and shorn |
Is yak wool soft?
Yes — soft as cashmere, because at 14–17 microns it is in cashmere's class. Softness in any animal fiber is largely a function of fiber diameter, and finer means softer against skin. That is why yak works for people who can wear a cashmere sweater but cannot tolerate a wool sock.
Does yak wool smell?
Yak is naturally odor resistant, so you can wear a pair for days of hiking, work or travel before washing. Fewer washes is also part of why yak garments outlast cotton ones.
Is yak wool ethical and sustainable?
Our yak cashmere is hand-gathered once a year by nomadic herders, not factory farmed. The animals need no extra feed and graze natural high-altitude vegetation. Buying it supports the herder families who raise them.
Yak or alpaca — which should I buy?
Both are fine, warm, low-itch alternatives to sheep wool. Yak is the warmth-per-weight champion for cold-weather work and winter hiking; baby alpaca is silkier, a touch cooler, and excellent for everyday wear. There is a fuller breakdown in our FAQs. Hunting in the cold is its own case — we cover boot fit, odor and layering in our guide to alpaca hunting socks.
